International Day of the Midwife
Every year on May 5th, we celebrate International Day of the Midwife. This is a time to recognize the essential role midwives play in supporting safe, empowering, and personalized care for families. At Indiana Birth Center, this day holds special meaning. It reflects the heart of what we do every day: center care around you, your choices, and your journey into parenthood.
The value of midwifery care feels especially relevant today. In the United States, families are increasingly seeking care that is relationship-based, evidence-informed, and focused on the whole person, instead of solely tending to the clinical aspects of pregnancy and birth. Midwives are uniquely trained to provide this kind of care. They spend more time with their clients, emphasize education and shared decision-making, and support physiologic birth whenever possible.
Despite these benefits, midwifery care remains underutilized in the United States. Only about 12% of births are attended by midwives. In many countries with stronger maternal health outcomes, midwives play a much larger role in maternity care. Encouragingly, this is beginning to shift as more families learn about their options and seek care that aligns with their values.
Families across the country are exploring alternatives to hospital-based care, including freestanding birth centers like ours. Midwives in Indiana are working to expand access, improve outcomes, and create spaces where people feel heard, respected, and supported. Birth centers offer a unique blend of safety and comfort, combining clinical expertise with a home-like environment that encourages calm, confidence, and connection.
Midwifery care is not just about birth! It’s about the entire experience. Midwives walk alongside you every step of the way. From prenatal visits that allow time for meaningful conversation, to continuous support during labor, and postpartum care that extends beyond a quick checkup. This continuity builds trust and fosters a deeper sense of confidence as you prepare to welcome your baby.
International Day of the Midwife is also a moment to reflect on a larger goal: improving maternal health outcomes. The United States continues to face significant challenges in this area, with rising rates of maternal morbidity and mortality. Midwives are part of the solution. Research consistently shows that midwifery-led care can reduce interventions, improve satisfaction, and support healthier outcomes for both parents and babies.
At Indiana Birth Center, we are proud to be part of this movement. We believe birth is not just a medical event. It is a transformative life experience. Our role is to provide the knowledge, support, and environment that allows your experience to unfold safely and meaningfully.
