Breastfeeding and Birth Center Care
The birth center model emphasizes holistic care, which means we provide support to our clients as a whole person, including the process of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum support, which includes breastfeeding! 94.5% of birth center clients initiate breastfeeding after birth, and are more likely to achieve long-term breastfeeding success.
At Indiana Birth Center, we take care to educate our clients on the benefits of breastfeeding and provide support. So let’s look at some of the benefits of breastfeeding and breast milk.
Maternal Benefits
Breastfeeding causes the release of oxytocin, the hormone that facilitates lactation. Oxytocin is the same hormone that helps the uterus return to its pre-pregnancy size. This means that breastfeeding in the early postpartum period can help reduce maternal recovery time. Each time your baby latches, both lactation and uterine recovery are triggered!
Additionally, oxytocin production can also reduce the chances of postpartum depression and anxiety. Bring on the baby snuggles!
Newborn Benefits
When you breastfeed your baby, a lot is going on that you don’t see. Some of your baby’s saliva is absorbed back through the milk duct, potentially triggering an immune response in the breastmilk. Your baby receives antibodies through your breastmilk that can help protect them from infection, illness, and gastrointestinal issues. How amazing is that?! People who bottle-feed breast milk should note that while there are benefits specific to the act of breastfeeding, breast milk from a bottle provides many of the same benefits to your baby.
Your baby’s cognitive growth can also benefit from breastmilk, including language, problem-solving skills, attention, and memory.
Breastfeeding Support
While breastfeeding is associated with many positive outcomes, as with any new skill, most people need some support. It is not always as easy as “just put the baby to the breast.” At Indiana Birth Center, the vast majority of our clients choose to breastfeed. Our clients receive information and education before birth, as well as continued support, starting in the immediate postpartum period at the birth center. The midwives can help with positioning and latch, and can offer suggestions for additional support when indicated.
